PASIG City Mayor Victor Ma. Regis “Vico” Sotto has resigned from Aksyon Demokratiko party, he and the party announced on Wednesday.

Sotto ran under the Aksyon Demokratiko banner when he won his first mayoralty term in 2019, and when he was reelected in 2022.

In a statement, Ernesto Ramel Jr., the party chairman, said that Aksyon Demokratiko was “saddened” by Sotto’s resignation.

“He is one of the inspirations of the party to be better and we were hoping that he will be the future of Aksyon Demokratiko,” he said.

However, Ramel said the party is “not lacking in talent and strong, young future leaders of this country that were elected last 2022 and those who also did not make it but had shown exceptional leadership abilities”.

He added, however, that Aksyon was “not closing its doors should he decide to return to his home party”.

“We wish him the best of luck and hope that he will continue to be an inspiration to aspiring young leaders out there,” said Ramel.

For his part, Sotto posted his resignation letter dated June 30 on Twitter but admitted that he never announced it until today, Wednesday.

In his letter addressed to Ramel, Sotto said that the party was headed toward a “different direction” because of “recent events” and believes that “we are no longer a group of individuals with similar political goals and ideals”.

“To me, this defeats the purpose of being a member of a political party,” said Sotto, son of actors Vic Sotto and Coney Reyes.

Sotto said he delayed his resignation until the end of the national elections in May.

The local official said, however that he would “always be grateful for the opportunity to share in Aksyon Demokratiko’s advocacies” and wished “the party and its members continued success”.

Despite being a member of the party, which endorsed former Manila mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso for president, Sotto did not endorse any presidential candidate.

Aksyon Demokratiko was founded by the late senator Raul Roco. It was recognized as a national political party in 1998 by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and is considered to be one of the major parties in the Philippines.

Former Manila mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Moreno is president of the party.

A total of 589 Aksyon Demokratiko party members throughout the country won in the 2022 elections including 3 congressman, 1 governor and 48 mayors.
